Company Overview

A Family Company

by Matthew McCarrick

"I am a sixth generation builder following in the footsteps of my great-great-grandfather, also Matthew McCarrick, who was a building contractor in Worksop, Nottinghamshire. My grandfather, Captain James McCarrick FCIOB, founded McCarrick Construction in 1953, upon moving to Chester-le-Street. He had previously honed his engineering and leadership skills in the army and from the outset the company was run with military precision and discipline. He grew the company gradually, taking on trusted members of staff, a lot of whom I’ve had the privilege of knowing all of my life. He was awarded the highest honor in the construction industry being elected as Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building in 1959.

His son and my father Michael McCarrick joined the company in 1976 and built upon the strong name the company had established within the region. Michael grew the company in a number of sectors, delivering award winning residential developments, conversions, commercial projects and established long term maintenance programmes across the region.

Together with fellow directors Keith Alderslade and Tony Pearce they continued to diversify the construction activities into pubs, hotels, offices, prisons, schools, universities, retail and beyond. They also grew the residential arm of the business and established our sister company, McCarrick Homes Ltd to deliver high quality new build projects and listed building conversions.

Lynn McCarrick (my mother) joined the company in the 1990s to head up our maintenance arm, delivering 24 hour reactive maintenance to pubs, hotels and restaurants across the North East. Lynn led the show home design for McCarrick Homes, winning numerous awards including Show Home of the Year.

Having spent many summers working for the company in my youth, I was fortunate enough to work with some fantastic members of our team, a lot of whom are still with us today. I moved to Manchester to study and for the next 14 years I built shopping centres, hotels, TV studios, hospitals, MOD projects across the country before returning to the North East. In 2014 I joined Keith, Tony, Michael and Lynn as a director of McCarrick Construction with the task of further developing our business whilst maintaining the standards of training for our team to ensure we have the best people delivering the best projects. The company is currently involved in a host of varied and interesting projects with many more in the pipeline and ongoing training schemes and apprenticeships. I'm excited to be part of a well established team as we continue to deliver the best places to work, learn and live across the North East."

Chester-le-Street, the local connection

McCarrick Construction benefits from Chester-le-Street's proximity to Durham, Sunderland and Newcastle but our team has historically been local lads and their sons and grandsons. Our connection to the town goes back to the 1950s and houses, offices, churches, shops and schools that we have built over the years form a central part of the community of Chester-le-street.

We also work with a local 'not-for-profit' business to ensure all of our waste timber is reused. This helps provide training and upskilling for those looking to start a career in joinery, it in turn creates jobs and voluntary positions within the community.

We are keen to continue to be an integral part of the local community and over the years have been a proud sponsor of community projects, youth groups, sports teams and charities.
